Ms. Alison thinks this is an example of Olivia's best work because she showed that she understands that films and stories cause different emotions. She was also able to retell the film to her classmates using specific details and correct sequence. | Olivia's favourite part of our 'How We Express Ourselves' unit of inquiry was our field trip to the Big Eyes, Big Minds Singapore International Children's Film Festival. She wanted to include this experience in her portfolio because: "I love the film The Meatballs and the Sorry Bully." When Olivia returned to school she created a piece of work which showed how the story made her feel: |

Every week we work on sorting different words in our word study journals. One of Olivia's favourite activities was when we explored the number of syllables (or word chunks) in words from The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Olivia clapped the syllables she heard in the words on the picture cards and sorted them into one or two syllable groups:
Olivia created this story using the iPad app 'Puppet Pals HD': As emergent writers, we are always taking risks in writing. We are experimenting with sounds and letter formations, as well as pencil grip and different writing tools. As the year continues we are learning to make more and more letter and sound connections to express our ideas through writing. In our journals we do our best to add labels, descriptions, or short stories to our drawings. We also participate in free writing sessions where we write whatever we want for one to two minutes and use the writing centre and class mailbox to communicate through writing during free play.
Here is some of Olivia's journal and free writing work. Olivia has started to add writing to her drawings which shows her understanding that print conveys a message. She confidently identifies consonant sounds and forms these letters. |
