Ms. Alison agrees that this is an example of Aziz's best work. He supported his group by remembering details from the story which needed to be included in their retell. When he was practicing the dramatic retell, he showed that he understood the feelings of the main character Max, when he explained that he had to act lonely to show how Max was feeling on the Wild Things' island.
Aziz's favourite part of our 'How We Express Ourselves' unit of inquiry was retelling Where the Wild Things Are through drama. He chose to include this piece in his portfolio because: "I was king and the wild rumpus was fun. I did a good job of being Max." Ms. Alison agrees that this is an example of Aziz's best work. Today Aziz independently started telling some parts of The Three Little Pigs story in his play. He decided to document his ideas using the iPad app 'Puppet Pals': Aziz created this story using the iPad app 'Draw & Tell': Aziz is showing an increasing sense of rhyme awareness. When we read a book with words that rhyme, he notices this quickly and shares his observation with the class. One of the favourite word sorts he completed in his word study journal is the rhyme sort below where he had to match rhyming picture cards to the words nose, head, hair, and knees.
As emergent writers, we are always taking risks in writing. We are experimenting with sounds and letter formations, as well as pencil grip and different writing tools. As the year continues we are learning to make more and more letter and sound connections to express our ideas through writing. In our journals we do our best to add labels, descriptions, or short stories to our drawings. We also participate in free writing sessions where we write whatever we want for one to two minutes and use the writing centre and class mailbox to communicate through writing during free play.
Here is some of Aziz's journal and free writing work. Aziz is becoming more confident with the correct formation of letters and is increasingly making direct connections between the sounds he hears and the letters he writes!
We read a book called "And Here's To You" by David Elliott, which talked about all of the things the author loves. We had a discussion about the things we love and recorded our ideas with words, drawings, and voices. |
